About

Expat Advantage exists to remove information asymmetry.

People who already live somewhere know what a fair rent is, which visa route actually applies, which costs arrive late, and which advice is out of date. People arriving usually do not — and the gap between those two positions is expensive.

The problem

Good information about moving abroad is scattered, undated and often wrong.

Anyone who has researched a move recognises the pattern. Official sources are authoritative but hard to read and rarely tell you what a rule means in practice. Forums and social media are practical but undated, contradictory, and frequently describe rules that were replaced two years ago. Commercial sites have an interest in the answer being yes.

What is missing is the middle: information that is specific enough to act on, consistent enough to compare across places, and honest enough to tell you when it does not know. That is the gap Expat Advantage is being built to fill.

Our approach is research, not marketing.

Expat Advantage is being built as a research and planning product. That shapes everything: the content is structured so countries can be compared rather than merely described, figures carry their sources, and the tools are designed to turn a general intention into a dated plan with a budget attached.

It also shapes what we do not do. We do not publish aspirational content, we do not present a move as easier than it is, and we do not treat a well-shot photograph as a substitute for a well-set table of numbers.

The Philippines first, because depth beats breadth.

Our initial market is the Philippines. Covering one country properly — its visa categories, its real costs, its regional differences and the things that reliably catch newcomers out — is more valuable than covering twenty countries at a depth that helps nobody.

The platform itself is deliberately country-agnostic. The research structure, the data model and the brand are all designed to carry additional countries. We will add them as the research for each meets the same standard, and we will not announce a country before that work is genuinely under way.

Where the product currently stands.

Expat Advantage is in development. Country guidance and the planning framework are being actively built; visa and residency tracking, financial tools, FX tracking and checklists are planned; community, creator and advisory services are being explored. The features page sets out each area with its current status.

Nothing on this website is a live product. There is no sign-up, no account and no connected service. When that changes, this site and our privacy policy will be updated before the functionality goes live — not after.

Editorial standards

The rules we hold our own material to.

These are not aspirations. They are the working standard for everything Expat Advantage publishes, and the basis on which the product should be judged.

01

Quantify or qualify

"Rents rose 14% year on year" is useful. "Rents are climbing fast" is not. Where we cannot put a number to something, we say what we do know and where the uncertainty sits.

02

Source and date, every time

Immigration rules change, prices move, and exchange rates move daily. Any figure we publish carries where it came from and when it was gathered, so you can judge whether it is still good.

03

Say "we do not know" in plain words

Some questions have no reliable data behind them. Saying so is more useful than a confident guess, and it is what lets the rest of the material be trusted.

04

Never romanticise a move

Moving country is expensive and reversible only at cost. We are here to make the decision better informed. Whether it is the right decision is yours to make.

Get in touch

We would rather hear a hard question than a kind one.

If you are planning a move, already living abroad, advising people who are, or working on something adjacent, we are interested in what you have found difficult. It directly shapes what gets built.
